Early Fathers Day!

IMG_1097.jpg

Alisa called and said she wanted to take her father HI fishing for a Fathers Day gift. I asked if she had ever been to Flamingo at Everglades National Park? She said no and we set it up. It didn’t take long and the rods were bending Snook and Jacks were hitting live shrimps on popping corks. She said she lives here and didn’t even know about Flamingo. The bite was good Snook, Trout, Jacks, Snappers, Ladyfish, and a 7 ft. Lemon Shark she caught all by herself. We had one more big bite which we never saw but pulled about 150 yards of line came in close and then did it a few more times. It was fun but they had enough and we called it a day. Great trip with great people.

I have a few openings next week for Father Day gifts, families are welcome to come with dad! if interested give me a call at 305 333 8149.

Summer is here!

My customers always ask when is the best time for Flamingo, the true answer is always. The summer mornings really gets them going. Live bait, top water lures or Gulps on jig heads will produce many species.

This happened with Mike and Martha Bonner this week. We got out as the sun was rising and the bite was on. The Snook were hitting live shrimp and Gulp Swimming Mullet. It was constant doubles until about 9 A.M.. The best was when Martha hooked a 24 inch Redfish and Mike had a decent Snook.

We decided to go look for some other species and ran out to the Gulf of Mexico. Once we found the cleaner water and some bait getting busted up it turned on again. The Redfish were were in these baits pretty good and Martha was non stop throwing a live shrimp. Mike had a giant Snook hit his Rapala “Twitch N Rap” and played with him for a minute until he jumped off. There was a massive storm sitting just off the coast, when the wind switched it was time to go. I was getting late and we made once last stop for a Tarpon. Mike had been throwing a fly all day so I thought why not, he did have a few hits but no Tarpon landed. All in all it was a great day with multiple “Slams”.

IMG_1083.jpg

I am with Boz Malik and his buddies Sal, Mario and Enron. They missed a turn and ended up in Key Largo which caused them to be a little late. We went out and the bite was slow at first but it turned with a non stop decent Trout bite. Right as it was getting good they said its time to leave. Good guys, allot of laughs while we fished but it was a short day.

I am with my wife and friends today we ran from Key Largo to Flamingo on a fun sand bar and fishing trip.

It was pretty breezy today out of the southeast, that wind direction hurts allot of my spots We started out with 1 nice Snook, Trout, a big Jack and I had a 30 lb. Tarpon on for 4 or 5 jumps which made my day. We had a good morning and headed to sandbar.

Fathers Day is coming so why not spend the day on my boat with your family. Kids a very welcome as well as the wife. Tip-it makes life easier when you bring the family!

Give me a call at 305 333 8149 and book a trip if you like to fish and enjoy the water.

Great day with the Deutsch Family!

I always enjoy my days with the Deutsch Ross, Mindy and their daughters Reggie and Roxy. They love Flamingo and make the long drive from Boca to fish with me. They are the clients that put all their faith in me. They know I always have their best interest in mind and I want them to catch everything that swims. This day was just like that, our first spot was very dirty. I decided to make a run out to the the Gulf of Mexico and it was worth it. The Snook were chasing pilchards and everyone was hooking up on every cast. We were throwing Rapala “Twitch n Raps”, Gulp Swimming Mullet and then a few live shrimp. We moved around and found some Permit roaming a shoreline. We only caught 1 but 2 others gave us some good runs and break offs. Roxy did a great job fighting the fish which tried to wrap her up like the others did. She landed it, it wasn’t a giant but it was a Permit.

Reggie was next, while floating baits for Tarpon a Lemon shark came up and ate it. Reggie fought like a pro and got it to the boat for pictures and release. Ross and Mindy were having a great day watching the girls catch plenty of fish ,that’s when a nice Tarpon rolled in front of us. Ross threw the '“Twitch n Rap’ in front of it let it sit and we were on. The Tarpon went nuts and broke us off! It was late in the day and we headed in hoping to get a Tarpon by the marina, we didn’t land one but hooked a couple.

As they were getting up on the dock I told the girls “ You did n excellent job fighting fish today” . Reggies answer gave me great satisfaction when she said “we just did what you have tough us all these years”. I was really happy to here that, sometimes it seems like no one is listening.

I fish with plenty of families with children and I enjoy it . If you would like your children to enjoy fishing give me a call at 305 333 8149

Flies in the wind!

Everglades National Park. The last month has had its ups and down with the wind but we always catch fish. The days the weather cooperates can be incredible. All these groups were family or friends and it gets competitive sometimes. Everyone wants a big fish and also catch the most. The conditions change at Flamingo everyday so it gets interesting. I always have a game plan and a back up plan depending on clients or weather. Flamingo offers many species of fish to catch but Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Trout, Tripletails, and many Sharks.

Most of my fishing is with spinning tackle these days but I occasionally get some fly anglers. These last few days were so much fun for me, it took me back to when I was a skiff guide .

These pictures are from several trips in no order just showing what can be caught daily. we have had some bigger Tarpon but no pictures.

5-15-2021

I fished the ABC tournament out of the Lorelei in Islamorada, I had Andrew Young and his friend Jason. Jason really never experienced the fishing we were doing today, I gave him a few tips and he caught a backcountry “Slam” of Redfish Snook and a Trout.

The bite was good and we ended up with 20 Snook a Redfish and a bunch of Trout on the score card it was a good day.

5-16-17- 2021

I am with brothers Kevin and Brian Frost. We ran to Flamingo from Key Largo. It is blow in the 20mph range early and picked up during the day and we are fly fishing. We manages a bunch of Snook, Trout and Jacks..

Day 2

We drove to Flamingo and started out with some Juvenile Tarpon and a bunch of Snook up to 32 inches.

It was only 8:30 and I said what would you like more Snook or Tarpon and Redfish. It was easy Tarpon and Reds. We Ran to the coast and found of course more Snook while sight fishing. Both guys were pretty good fly anglers and made some great cast at laid up fish in super shallow water. I was keeping my open looking for Tarpon to show up on an incoming tide and they did! I positioned the boat in the line they were moving and they were getting close. The wind was cranking well over 20 mph but thy continued casting their flies at them. I saw a flash on Brian’s fly and it was on for a second. I had a spinning rod rigged for fish out of range and we had a crazy fish hit, it jumped 5 times almost in the boat. It broke the line and it was late we headed back but made a stop for a couple more juvenile Tarpon. The had about 20 hits and caught a few and called it a day. We though we were fishing tomorrow but the winds were increasing to unfishable. I had a great day fly fishing with Kevin and Brian.

Everything is Biting!

Fishing is good in general in Everglades National Park, but the winds has made it tougher. Most days when we get out early before wind starts to blow we have a good chance at Tarpon. We are throwing lures and using bait, the Sharks really like the bait. I have mostly been fun fishing keeping the rods bent with anglers that don’t mind few Sharks. The Snook bite has been steady with plenty of small fish. The Trout bite has been really good with fish up to 23 inches. The list of fish also includes Redfish, Jacks, Snappers, Ladyfish, Goliath Groupers and Triple Tails. Caught Lookin Charters is a family and kid friendly charter service. I still have a few days open in April if you would like to get the kids out for “Spring Break”.

The weather has been breezy the last few days but we have kept the rods bent. All anglers pictured were first timers to Flamingo. Lots of small Snook and some slot Redfish. Tarpon were really tough in the windy conditions. Pilchards showed up and made catching lots of species possible. All in all lots of satisfied anglers , kids and lady’s on every trip. Windy but we are catching them!

IMG_0531.jpeg

I fished with good friend Wayne Mckinney and Rick today, we started out on Tarpon but winds got a little on the strong side. I found some Pilchards and we went Snook fishing and we caught a bunch of them. I only had about 40 Pilchards but everyone got eaten by Snook or Trout. At the end of the day we saw the Tarpon busting up and gave it a shot with no luck.

IMG_1464.jpg

Today I am with my friend and accountant Fred, someone I love to watch catch fish. He really enjoys it! We started out on Tarpon while the wind was only around 10 mph, that didn’t last long. We worked around Whitewater trying to find Tarpon but it started blowing around 20 plus. I said I want to go try somewhere I hadn’t been to in a while nd he was good with it. We were looking for Snook but were surprised by the Trout bite up to 20 inches. We moved around a bit and got a Snook and then a bunch of Snook. Fred also caught a Redfish so plan worked. We made lots of cast and caught lots of Snook and another Redfish. The fish ate Gulp Swimming Mullet and other soft plastic’s. The wind was well into the 30 mph range as a front was making its way thru. We decided to head in beat the rain that was coming, very successful day.

The weather going to get better in the next few weeks and the fishing will too! If you would like to catch Tarpon, Snook, Redfish, Trout and others give me a call at 305 333 8149. Caught Lookin Charters is a family friendly charter company, wife and kids are welcome.

It's on back there!

Everglades National Park is red hot right now, Tarpon and Snook are our main targets big and small. Most anglers want to keep the rod bent so I try to fish areas where we can target other species as well as Tarpon. This past week we really caught all the species. Giant Tarpon-big Snook and Pompano were all were caught on a Gulp Swimming Mullet - White and Chartreuse tail. The baby Tarpon wouldn't leave that Swimming Mullet alone. The list of species included Mackerel, Cobia, Jacks, Big Sharks, Redfish, Barracuda, and hundreds of Trout.

The giant Tarpon are in as well as plenty of boat traffic but we still manage to get some hook ups most on a Gulp Swimming Mullet- white and chartreuse. Had 2 excellent catches this week Doug from Illinois with a Tarpon that was well over 150 Lbs. and Diego with a big fat 37 in Snook. I covered the whole park in the last week , Fl. Bay, Gulf of Mexico and all of Whitewater Bay. There were plenty of fish every where even though the winds really didn’t cooperate.

Open for Business

It was a long 5 weeks being off the water after having a complete Hip Replacement. I got out on the boat for the first time Sunday Jan 24th and had no issues. 5 weeks away from Flamingo is a first in 35 years. I gave myself 6 weeks to rehab and got there in 5 so I'm ready for action.

The fishing was great with well over 100 Trout, Snook and plenty of others. I was hoping for a big Tarpon bite but only had a few shots.

If you are up for some fun fishing give me a call at 305 333 8149. Caughtlookin Charters is a family friendly charter company, bring the wife, kids, brothers and dads.

Happy New Year!

I’m sorry for the lack of reports The last few weeks but I had to have “Hip Replacement surgery”. I would like to thank the people that fish with me in 2020 although it was a very tough year. I am hoping to be back on the water by February 1 and man do I need it. The only consolation lately is the weather has just to be tough.

The next 2 months should have great back country Tarpon and that’s what I live for. The big girls showed up the first week of December but I don’t think water temps have cooperated since.. The Snook have made a tremendous recovery in the last 11 years since the major freeze of 2010. This gives us a really good chance at “Backcountry Slams”. which I try for every customer.

Give me a call 305 333 8149 and book a trip in February and help get me back in the game. Caught Lookin Charters is a family and children friendly charters service.

These pics are from my last few trips.

Storm after storm, we're finally back to fishing!

The last 2 weeks have been really windy and rainy from either big systems or a really wet Tropical Storm.

The couple weeks prior the bite was pretty good with a decent Mullet run and plenty of Pilchards .The Snook and Tarpon bite was fun while it lasted.

10-13-20

I fished Flamingo with Alan and Frank today, we all have been waiting for good weather. It didn’t take long before we had to put on our raincoats. We got wet for 5 minutes and it turned into a beautiful day. The first stopped produced 10 Snook and that was a good thing because the rest of the day was a Snook here and there. We hooked and 7 or 8 Tarpon a Goliath Grouper, Trout and Frank caught this nice Snook on a live Mullet. It was a very enjoyable day with Alan and Frank.

Mullet Run in Everglades National Park!

This past week I fished from Port of the Islands, Flamingo to Key Largo and live bait is the key. There are Mullet schools everywhere and fish re chasing them. The weather continues to be an either with rain or wind. If you don’t go you wont catch fish and my guys all went! The Gulf of Mexico has been loaded with Mullet schools and tarpon are crushing them. This past weekend I just sat with baits out and watched the Tarpon blow them out of the water, some were giant. The Snook were on fire Saturday in rain in between the rain squalls. The 3 guys I fished landed around 70 or so Snook up to 32 inches but who’s counting. They also caught Tarpon Redfish, Goliath Grouper, Trout, Snappers, Ladyfish and Sharks. They were beat at the end of the day.

I fished a Tournament out of Port of the Islands and again cold front, 25 mph and fog first thing. We did catch fish but it was allot of work.

I also helped out on a offshore trip on Thursday afternoon where we targeted Tunas in 5 to 8 ft. seas. We caught plenty and saw one of the biggest sharks I’ve ever seem out on the Islamorada Hump. We ate good that night. The next day we went into the back country and caught a nice Redfish and Jack but fishing was tough with winds @ 25. It was a short day due to their flight leaving.

Fun Day at the "Romp in the Swamp"

IMG_0562.jpg
IMG_8085 (3).JPEG

The fishing this time of year gets a little different than the usual Flamingo fishing for me. I like to target the Mutton Snappers and big Yellow Jacks that roam the edge of the Biscayne Bay Flats. The key is to find schools of Pilchards, load up your live wells and then go chum them up. This is purely fun fishing at its best with lots of by catch of Mangrove Snappers, Groupers, Yellowtail Snappers, Cuda's and of course the Sharks always show up for a free meal.

At the same time we are getting the first wave of the Mullet run coming down the coast and have made their way onto Miami Beach. The Tarpon follow and put on an incredible show. The Snook and Jacks are also right in the middle of all the action.

With all that going on I still have to make trips to Everglades National Park. This past weekend I fish  the Romp in the Swamp Tournament out of Port of the Isles. The format is most inches of Snook, Redfish and Trout fish with my son James, my buddy Paul and his son PJ. The day started out good. We found Tarpon, Snook and a Redfish in a small cove chasing bait. I hate leaving active Tarpon but we had a game plan of making a long run south, it didn't pay off because of a S.W. wind and dirty water.

We ran back to the area we started out. I saw a blow up out of the corner of my eye while running. I turned around and found the mother load of bait getting blown out of the water.  All 3 anglers hooked up with Snook, Redfish and Jacks. We worked it until they quit biting. We had Snook up to 32 inches and Reds to 24. All we needed now was a Trout to complete the Slam. We caught the Trout with  minutes to spare in the tournament. Lots of stress and fun.

All fish were caught on Rapala Twitch and Raps, Gulp swimming Mullets. The winning team had 86 inches and we were at 72 inches taking 12 place out of 85 boats. We were surprised during award ceremony when they called our team name for Top Junior Angler

Family Slams Matter!

I

I only fished Flamingo the last week although it was busy in the parking lot never we had a crowd problem. I covered lots of water from Flamingo north to Ponce Deleon Bay on a few days and found fish in most areas.

This was a good week of fishing, Plenty of Tarpon bites. The girls and ladies did an excellent job of casting ,hooking and landing their fish. The Tarpon fishing should remain good for the next month. The full moon and Snook season opening seemed to slow my Snook down this week but the Tarpon. Steve and Stacy Staffer worked hard for their bites but Stacy ended up with a Slam of Tarpon, Snook and Redfish. Awesome day with them!

The Lancet Family was in for a treat today, it started out slow but ended up on fire. John , Gina and daughters Jackie and Mattie. Jackie had the hot hand early hooking 2 Tarpon, they caught some Trout and Snappers in first 30 minutes.

I have had a hot spot with no boats in the area for the last week, there has been a Shrimp run early in the Morning. The Tarpon have been going crazy popping them, we hooked lots of them until they shut off landing 6

Gina had caught a Trout early on added a Snook and a Redfish giving her a Slam, very nice. The girls did not stop casting all days and did an excellent job. John also added another Tarpon along with Jacks and Ladyfish.

On a fun day trip with my buddy Mitch we got into the same Tarpon action, we had some fish up to 40 lbs. plus a few Snook and a Goliath.

The full moon always has some effect on some of the fish, all in all a great week with some awesome families!

Fishing with kids, lots of fish catching!

The last week or so has been tough on me because of an eye injury but I’m back. A torn Retina has kept me of the water for almost 10 days but I‘m ready to catch some big Snook if you are up to it.

The baby Tarpon made a nice showing with the Riordan Group. They hooked and caught around 25 Tarpon and some Snook. They also caught plenty of Sharks Jacks, and Ladyfish.

I also fish with Jake he did me a favor so I took him out and had some nice hits including a Barracuda Yellow Jack and Bonitas.

I also fished with my son which only had a couple hours but caught Big Bonitas on light tackle.

Iffy weather still produces fish!

IMG_1597.jpeg

The last week has been hit or miss mostly because of a low that was sitting out in the Gulf of mexice. It brought serious storms and winds making things tough. That being said 2 out of my last 3 trips were very productive. One Shark fishing trip was was plagued with bad weather, we stuck it out until lightning forced us off the water.

There have been Snook, Redfish and some Baby Tarpon for my customers to play with, there have also been trout Jacks ladyfish and of course Sharks eat our Tarpon baits. It should stay decent for the next month with Tarpon sticking around in several areas.

R.I.P.

I am with Kathy Widener, her daughter Jackie and her husband Arron. I received an email from Kathy Widener letting me know her husband Rick had passed. They are one of my longest customers going back around 18 years. Kathy said he had a request of spending eternity in the back country of the Everglades, this is coming from a guy that lives in San Diego. Over the years Kathy was a die hard and Rick was there for here support. He would let her have all the fish but she does well on her own.

This morning Kathy put on a clinic, we found some Tarpon and she had to hook a dozen or so. She landed a few plus a really nice Snook. The emotions seem to get to her and her daughter a little. I took them to a spot where Rick caught his biggest Snook ever while trying to catch a Goliath Grouper. I haven’t caught a fish there in years, the Goliaths were there and we caught 3. This is where Rick will spend eternity! I told Kathy I will check on him back there.

I am Fishing Flamingo with Bob and Tim today. The morning started out with 20 or so Snook by 9 A.M. including a 34 inch fat SnookThe weather was iffy and the was a giant water spot basically right over Flamingo Marina, (cant get the picture to load).

The next spot was on fire, it started slow and I explained we just have to find them. We did and for 2 hours on every cast the caught a Snook. These aren’t giants but its the best action I could ask for customers. They caught around 100 Snook and it was only 1130.

There was a monster thunder storm north of us which kept us from going any further so I turned back and back towards Flamingo. We found some more fish and a a few Redfish as well. Tim caught a big Snook on a Voodoo Mullet while Bob was hooked up to a Redfish.

Bob sat down to eat lunch and Tim wore them out on a point with good current while he did. This was a great day every spot we stopped at had fish on it.

Great Fathers Day Weekend

I had a great Fathers Day weekend fishing with my family and dinner on Saturday because I was booked on Fathers Day. This is part of being a guide people like to get away on the holidays. I can always say no but its usually good clients.

This Fathers Day I spent it with Robert Chang and his kids Nate and Lilly. The weather was really iffy on the ride in but it cleared for a couple hours. We started out with netting mullet and having a Tarpon try to eat it one but wasn’t big enough. Nate caught a couple nice fish It just happens to be on a custom kids Biscayne rod I had made from a broken rod. The rod is 5 feet long and makes every fish feel like a giant. Lilly caught a nice Snook as their dad kept looking for the big one. The sky was getting dark and we were having to move around and that’s when I found the fish. We tried to hold on but it was racing across the flat and we had to go. We dodged the storms for the next hour and finally called it.

Today I am part of a 2 boat Trip, with Capt Mike Hutchinson. We had Felipe and Alfonso and their sons. We ran over from Key Largo and fish the Snake Bite area. It started out slow but really turned on when the tide changed. They caught Snook after Snook until the Sharks moved in. This worked out because they wanted to catch them. We were side by side and just non stop . Most of the Sharks were Lemons in the 30 - 50 Lb. range. They had to have 20 or so fish between them mean while we were still catching a few Snook and Trout. It was getting late and had a long ride back.

"The Great Escape"

I had a great day with the Covin family, Greg, Shelly, Peyton and Luke. I have watched them grow up over the years. We started out with some Jacks and Snappers, and then we got into the fish. It was non stop for an hour with Redfish and Snook. The fish ate live fingerling mullet and gulp swimming mullet which were the same size. Greg loves Redfish and had a couple for dinner. We released a bunch of Snook. They are just one of the families I have fished with in the last few weeks that have been quarantined that needed to “Escape” . Fun Time for Families!

The fishing has been from ok to really good on this last full moon. I have fished the back county as well as the Gulf of Mexico and Fl. Bay. The numbers were down but the quality was good. Hitting the incoming tide this week at the right time paid off on everyday I fished. The Redfish cooperated 3 of 5 days and Snook on the others. The water is 90 degrees and the Sharks are hungry ,we didn’t loose to many fish to Sharks.

I found Tarpon a couple of the days and they were eating Mullet fingerlings and the were not interested in our lures. we would throw baits out in front of rolling Tarpon only to have the Sharks eat them first.

This week was really about getting people out after quarantine 4 of 5 trips were people who have been locked in for months and just needed to get out. It was more about bending rods then giants. This does make the job somewhat easier when people are just enjoying the day outside. Good fish with good people makes it lots of fun, thanks to all that fish with me.
